Welcome to Mr. Ryan Sterner's Wiki
I'm Ryan Sterner, a graduate student at East Stroudsburg University. I graduated in 2008 from ESU with a degree in English/Secondary Education. I love teaching, especially because every day is unique. I also believe strongly that the best way to learn something is to teach it, and through teaching, I have learned much about myself and others.
I firmly believe that the personality of the instructor is one of the most important factors that affects student learning. I simply love teaching young adults. Because of this, I am enthusiastic (or at least pretend to be) every single day in front of the classroom. If students realize that the teacher is excited to teach, they will be more excited and willing to learn. Connecting with students on a personal level also provides endless pathways to instruction; simply understanding a student's interests can provide a clue to how a student will best retain information. Creating meaningful connections with students, for me, is the most effective way to consistently allow students to learn.
To me, a meaningful statement that I can apply to teaching is the following, said by Henry David Thoreau: "Do not hire a man who does your work for money, but him who does it for the love of it". Although this is a simple quote, it is also poignant. Passion is pivotal to successful teaching; without passion, a teacher will not perform at his or her best, and the students will not benefit.
